A standard resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch) is typically required for high-quality print jobs to prevent noticeable pixelation. However, for large format printing, the resolution requirement is much lower due to the larger print space, the viewing distance, and the capabilities of the printer. There are several factors to consider when preparing large format graphics for exhibition printing, and traditional resolution rules used in standard offset printing may not apply.
A common misconception is that higher resolution automatically leads to better print quality. This is not true for large format printing, where higher resolution results in very large file sizes that can become difficult to edit or manage. For smaller prints like business cards, brochures, or magazines, the closer distance from the viewer to the media makes the image’s pixels more noticeable, requiring higher resolutions. However, with large format prints, the viewing distance is much greater, and pixels are less noticeable at lower resolutions.
For large format graphics, a resolution of around 100 dpi is typically sufficient. This provides a good balance between file size, image quality, and the final print result. Understanding this helps clients determine the appropriate file size, especially when sourcing images from stock libraries.
